The 5th Wave

Assalamualaikum w.b.t.

Yesterday my sister dragged me to cinema to accompany her to watch this movie and another movie which I will make a review later. At first, we wanna watch horror movie 'The Forest' (I think?) but then she changed the plan, idk why but I just follow her because she's the one who pay (lol) so you see, this is my first movie review hihi XD

(Based on the book The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey)

Title: The 5th Wave

Director: J Blakeson

Language: English

Running time: 1 hr 52 min

Genre: Sci-fi, Action, Adventure, Thriller

Rating: PG-13

Synopsis:

The human race stands on the brink of extinction as a series of alien attacks decimate the planet, causing earthquakes, tsunamis and disease. Separated from her family, teenager Cassie Sullivan will do whatever it takes to reunite with her brother Sam. Fate leads her to form an alliance with Evan Walker, a young man who may be her last hope. Forced to trust each other, Cassie and Evan fight for survival as the invaders prepare a fifth assault.

Review:

Okay, at first, I didn't know this movie was adapted from a novel until my sis told me haha. Actually, I'm quite dissatisfied because I forgot to bring my glasses (I'm short-sighted) so I couldn't see very clear of what actually happened throughout the movie though. But I will give my opinion of what I think I understand from this movie.

The main character, Cassie, was a typically normal high school girl who, yeah, normally, have crush, friends, loves family and more. She lead a normal life until suddenly, a weird thing call 'The Others', appeared on Earth. After that, her life changed drastically. That abnormal thing 'The Others' planned to destroy Earth by sending different types of wave, the wave simply means like a disaster such as earthquake, tsunami, disease and more.

With the lost of her beloved parents, she was determined to keep her brother safe. Unluckily, she was separated from her brother because of certain circumstances. Her brother was brought to a place where, he would be trained as an army, or fighter, or something like that, to fight against The 5th Wave that'll be sent by The Others. Cassie, however, met a guy Evan, who was determined to help her to get back her brother.

I love how she changed from a typical high school girl to a cold blooded killer. No offense she is the most interesting character throughout the story. I don't know why this story receives a lot of negative response (based of what I read from other reviews) just be grateful that another sci-fi and young adult series are filmed, couldn't you? I believe that this movie, just like The Hunger Games, are not that 'grasping' at first, but then, the story may develop after the second and third series.

The 'alien' here are not-so-alien, they appeared like a normal human being, I don't sure because someone in the movie mention that the alien lives like a parasite inside the host (human). So, overall, there are slightly alien appearance here, which I like the most because that was the most realistic idea.

The plot-twist is good, at the end of the movie you'll be sure which side is 'the good' and which side is 'the bad', as at first you don't have a clear picture of which side you should belong to. This story gives us several lessons of how to be more 'human-like'. You know, 'humans' nowadays are not very human-like, right?

Conclusion; this story is a good watch for you, especially for a sci-fi and young adult freak like me haha.

Overall rating: ★★★★ 3⁄4
